Fay Prescott travels to
Old Drove House to take up a position as duenna to Rachel
Proudfoot. She is welcomed warmly, but discovers to her
consternation that Rachel believes that she is there to
be governess to her younger sister. It transpires that
Rachel has formed an undesirable attachment to a local
farmer, from which Fay is expected to wean her before her
debut. Despite this forced deception, Fay settles in
happily, and even arouses the romantic interest of the
local vicar. But Fay has a past from which she cannot escape, and the arrival of Sir Jackson Hooper as a house guest throws everything that she had thought to achieve into jeopardy. Is it possible for her to find happiness at Old Drove House, or must she once more throw herself upon Sir Jacksons mercy?
